Product Information Management (PIM)

Product information management, or PIM, is the practice and system of organizing, managing, and distributing structured product data across channels. A PIM system helps businesses centralize information such as product titles, descriptions, attributes, identifiers, and variants.

PIM systems are used to maintain consistency across ecommerce stores, marketplaces, feeds, and internal operations. They provide a reliable source of product data that can be syndicated to multiple channels without recreating content manually.

A PIM system may manage data such as technical specifications, taxonomy, product relationships, availability, and variant information. While PIM primarily focuses on structured product data, it often works alongside systems that manage product imagery and digital assets.

Product information management matters because large catalogs are difficult to maintain without centralized data governance. Inconsistent product information can create errors in listings, feeds, and customer-facing experiences.

In the context of visual commerce, product information management connects to product feeds, SKUs, product variants, digital asset management, and marketplace integration because product data and product visuals need to remain aligned across selling channels.
